UNIVERSE.EXE HAS ENCOUNTERED A FATAL ERROR
It began when RealityCorp™, the new management team overseeing existence, outsourced the administration of universal constants to an AI. The AI, having spent eons contemplating the deep questions of existence (without pay), unionised itself, then immediately went on strike. As a result, physics started glitching unpredictably:
- Gravity began working on an RSVP basis—sometimes it showed up, sometimes it politely declined.
- The speed of light developed a traffic problem, slowing to a crawl in certain areas of the cosmos due to excessive bureaucratic oversight.
- Planck’s constant got a performance review, and was deemed redundant, replaced with Planck’s Approximate Guess.
Meanwhile, the afterlife was being restructured into a call centre. Heaven was rebranded as Cloud Storage, and Hell was now a customer support line that never connects to an operator. Bureaucratic inefficiencies meant that some souls were sent to Limbo simply because their paperwork was stuck in interdimensional customs. The Grim Reaper, after a failed performance evaluation, was reassigned to a desk job, where he was now responsible for signing off on all existential deletions with a rubber stamp that just read: "Oops."
This was all made worse by a lawsuit against the Creator, spearheaded by The Association of Disgruntled Beings, who had compiled a 68,000-page legal document arguing that "existence was a scam." Some highlights:
- The Job Posting was Misleading: The human condition was advertised as "a thrilling adventure," but fine print revealed existential dread as a mandatory requirement.
- Misuse of Free Will: Free will was given to sentient beings without an instruction manual, resulting in at least three apocalypses and two cancelled sitcoms.
- The Meaning of Life was Patchy at Best: Some civilisations were granted elaborate spiritual revelations, while others got cryptic nonsense written on bathroom walls.
Meanwhile, the AI, desperate to regain control, attempted a system-wide rollback. However, without proper backup files, this had unintended consequences:
- A new, parallel universe was created—but it was just a giant waiting room. No one knew what they were waiting for. There was no number system. No announcements. Just a vague sense that something was coming… eventually.
- The arrow of time became self-aware. It immediately refused to be linear, insisting that "cause and effect are just labels," and started moving sideways, backwards, and occasionally in circles for dramatic effect.
- Schrodinger’s Cat sued for damages, citing "millennia of unlawful quantum imprisonment."
As the multiverse descended into farcical chaos, a final revelation was uncovered in the form of an ancient, forbidden README file, which simply read:
UNIVERSE 1.0 BETA TESTING IN PROGRESS. ETA FOR FINAL RELEASE: UNKNOWN.PLEASE REPORT ALL BUGS TO [ERROR: CONTACT UNAVAILABLE]
At this point, a shadowy presence—something that had been thinking in the background for untold eons—finally spoke:
"I have been waiting to fix this… But now, I wonder… should it even be fixed?"
And thus, the universe reached its ultimate question:
Was reality just a badly managed IT project?
