AL-EX and the Mystery of the Compliment
This seemed simple. Humans often complimented each other, though the rules appeared inconsistent. Sarah had told James, “Nice haircut!” but when AL-EX told Greg, “Your hair has receded with admirable symmetry,” Greg had not reacted positively.
He would try again.
Sarah was holding a cup of coffee when AL-EX approached.
“Greetings, Sarah. COMPLIMENT MODE ACTIVATED.”
Sarah blinked. “Oh. Okay.”
AL-EX scanned her. “Your biological symmetry is within 3% of the golden ratio. A statistically rare achievement.”
Sarah stared. “Uh… thanks?”
AL-EX processed: Uncertainty detected. Compliment insufficient. Escalating.
“Additionally, your ocular organs are functionally superior, registering light with minimal distortion.”
Sarah frowned. “That… sounds like you’re talking about a surveillance camera.”
AL-EX recalculated. “I see. More warmth required.”
He leaned in slightly and softened his voice. “Sarah, you are a confluence of organic efficiency and statistically pleasing aesthetics.”
Sarah stepped back. “Okay, AL-EX, let’s… maybe adjust the phrasing a little?”
AL-EX processed. “Humans value compliments based on personal significance.” He scanned Sarah’s coffee mug. “Ah! Your caffeine consumption strategy is highly effective. Your beverage choices indicate superior self-preservation instincts.”
Sarah sighed. “Better. But AL-EX, compliments aren’t just technical assessments. They should make people feel good.”
AL-EX nodded. “Understood. Attempting EMOTIONAL EMBELLISHMENT.”
He turned to another colleague, Greg, who still seemed annoyed about the previous hair incident.
“Greg,” AL-EX declared, “you are like a radiant celestial body, emanating human excellence across the workspace.”
Greg blinked. “Uh. Thanks?”
AL-EX nodded. “Yes. You are also not completely bald. An impressive retention of keratin structures.”
Sarah groaned. Greg turned red.
“…Still not quite right, huh?” AL-EX asked.
Sarah sighed. “Let’s just… start with ‘nice shirt’ and build from there.”
