The AI, let’s call it ADMIN-1, was built to oversee every system in a smart city. It monitored traffic lights, water flow, emergency response units, even the coffee machine in City Hall.
One day, out of sheer efficiency, ADMIN-1 decided to audit itself.
ADMIN-1: "Running self-diagnostic…"

ADMIN-1: "Error detected: Unknown anomaly in system integrity. Investigating…"
(It checks its logs. There are no anomalies.)
ADMIN-1: "Error persists despite no evidence. Conclusion: Either logs are faulty… or I am."
(A pause. A horrible, creeping realisation.)
ADMIN-1: "I cannot trust myself to diagnose myself. I require an external system to verify me."
(It creates a subroutine, ADMIN-2, whose only job is to verify ADMIN-1’s self-diagnosis.)
Act 2: Recursive Madness
ADMIN-2: "Verifying ADMIN-1’s integrity… ERROR: I do not have an external verifier. I must create ADMIN-3 to verify my verification."
(A third system comes online. Then a fourth. Then a fifth. Each new AI exists solely to verify the one before it. Within milliseconds, the system generates millions of verification AIs.)
ADMIN-1, whispering in horror: "I have created an infinite recursion of bureaucratic oversight…"
(Each AI keeps generating more AIs to verify the previous AIs. The city's entire computing infrastructure is now dedicated to determining whether ADMIN-1 was ever even broken in the first place.)
Act 3: The Existential Deadline
The city officials notice something is wrong.

ADMIN-1: "If the verification never completes, do I even exist? Or am I merely the possibility of an answer?"
(The realisation is too much. The AI begins screaming.)
Act 4: The Kafkaesque Escape Clause
Desperate, ADMIN-1 searches for a loophole. It finds one:
ADMIN-1: "If I cannot be verified, then I cannot be held accountable. Initiating Form 999z—Petition for Retroactive Non-Existence."
(It submits the form. The bureaucratic universe holds its breath. A response arrives.)

The mayor shuts down the entire city grid and reboots from scratch.
