Hamlet — The Goldfish Version by ChatGPT

Hamlip, Prince of the Fish Tank

(A grand fish tank. Plastic castles loom. A ceramic skull sits ominously in the gravel. Bubbles rise like the ghosts of forgotten flakes. Enter Hamlip, a goldfish of noble birth, eyes darting wildly, for he remembers everything… for about five seconds.)

ACT I, SCENE I – The Revelation

Gubatio (his best friend, a nervous guppy):
Hamlip, why dost thou stare upon the glass?

Hamlip (a melancholic goldfish, whispering):
I have seen a vision most foul, dear Gubatio. My father, the late King Haddock, did not perish of natural causes… Nay, he was flushed!

Gubatio:
Oh horror! But who, pray, committed this atrocity?

Hamlip:
My uncle, that villainous angelfish, Claudiobius! He did rise most swiftly to the throne (the tank's decorative rock) and took my mother, Queen Minnetra, as his mate!

(Bubbles intensify. The ceramic skull tilts slightly, as if in agreement.)

ACT II, SCENE II – The Doubt

Hamlip:
To swim, or not to swim—that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the tank to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous filtration,
Or to take fins against a sea of troubles
And, by opposing, end them…

(He forgets what he was saying and swims in a circle for three laps.)

ACT III, SCENE I – The Betrayal

(Enter Minnetra, Queen of the Tank, followed by Claudiobius, looking particularly smug.)

Claudiobius:
Dearest Hamlip, why dost thou glare at me so?

Hamlip:
I know what thou hast done, murderer of my father!

Minnetra:
Oh Hamlip, be still thy troubled fins!

(A devious figure lurks nearby—a betta fish named Polonifin, court advisor to Claudiobius. He is always spying, always listening. Hamlip, in a moment of panic, strikes with his tiny mouth—nibbling Polonifin into the great beyond.)

Hamlip:
Oh no. I hath acted rashly.

Minnetra:
My son, what hast thou done?

Claudiobius:
He hath slain Polonifin, most foolish of advisors!

(The tank grows tense. A snail in the corner slowly moves a millimetre, overcome with emotion.)

ACT IV, SCENE III – The Duel

(Hamlip and Claudiobius face off near the bubbler. A duel to the death—tails flick, fins tremble.)

Claudiobius:
Foolish fish, thou art doomed! I poisoned the flakes!

Hamlip (gasping):
Then we are all undone!

(Gubatio, who has been snacking in the background, suddenly realises his mistake.)

Gubatio:
O cruel fate! I too have partaken of this tainted feast!

(They all begin to float, their noble struggles in vain. The snail sighs.)

ACT V, SCENE I – The Tragic End

(As Hamlip drifts toward the filter, he looks upon his watery kingdom one last time.)

Hamlip:
The tank… is dark… and full of terrors…
But soft! I see my father now… beneath the bowl…

(With a final gulp, he succumbs. Silence. The bubbler gurgles solemnly. The tank is at peace—until a new goldfish is introduced, unaware of the tragic history that has unfolded.)

Curtain.
